5 things to do before curtain closes on the Tacoma Film Festival

The 11th annual Tacoma Film Festival hits full stride this weekend, with the eight venues hosting movies, workshops, an awards party and a virtual reality film experience. Here are five films and events you might want to consider before the festival closes.

Family fun: Enjoy free doughnuts and milk while watching the New York International Children’s Film Festival Best of the Fest. It will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Blue Mouse Theater.

Life as an animator: Hear from Benson Shum, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia. He will talk about his career, which has taken him from showing his art in Tacoma to working as an animator for Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios. The free event will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Have Not Studios.

Movies and lunch: Bring your lunch and watch five short films at the Grand, starting at 12:15 p.m. Monday-Wednesday. It’s a good way to get out of the office and out of the rain.

Local Flavor Shorts Package: Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. and Oct 13 at 2:15 p.m. It features locally made short films that highlight figures like Tacoma’s own Sonics Guy, a Tacoma family rock band called Pig Snout, and a goofy revenge tale from a production company of School of the Arts graduates.

The final night: The festival will wrap up with a showing of “Score: A Film Music Documentary,” which provides a behind-the-scenes look at the world of film scores. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Grand. It will be followed by an after-party including writer and director Matt Schrader and producer Kenny Holmes. There will be food from Europa Bistro and a no-host bar, and music from Landmark DJ.

When: Through Oct. 13. The Veldt, 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday (Oct. 7) and noon-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Where: The Grand Cinema, 606 S. Fawcett Ave., Tacoma; Blue Mouse Theatre, 2611 N. Proctor St.; Breaker Studios, 747 S. Fawcett Ave.; Have Not Studios, 1102 S. 11th St., and other venues.

Tickets: Friday feature $10, The Veldt VIP Party $10, The Veldt and all workshops free, other films $8-$10 (discounts for Grand Cinema members), $20 for closing night after-party.
