What’s better than reading books, watching movies? Talking about them. Join our new clubs

Trapped inside by the coronavirus, many of us are turning to stories not just to escape the new normal but also to enrich our lives.

That is why The News Tribune is launching a movie club and a book club.

Selections for the movie club are set for the next several weeks. For this first week, it will be a throwback to the classic “Dirty Dancing”, which you will be able to livestream this Friday via Lionsgate’s YouTube page at 6 p.m. PST.

You then can discuss the movie in our new Facebook group.

On May 1 you can see “La La Land” and on May 8 you can see “John Wick”. Both will stream at the same time, same place. We will vote on future movies following that.

As for the book club, we will be selecting a book for the month of May.

Over the next week, you will have the chance to pick from three books.

“Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng is a 2017 novel and also the source material for the new Hulu series. It is her second novel and takes place in Shaker Heights, Ohio, where Ng grew up. The novel is about two families from different walks of life who find themselves living in 1990s Shaker Heights.

“Dune” by Frank Herbert is a 1965 science fiction novel that is not only the inspiration for a park in Tacoma but has been made into a new film that is set to be released this December. The first book in the saga is what we would be reading. It follows Paul Atreides and his life on the planet Arrakis with all the layers of conflict that exist there.

“The Incendiaries” by R. O. Kwon is a book that tackles powerful themes of faith, loss and radicalization. It follows a young woman who is indoctrinated into a cult on her campus as told by three characters: Phoebe Lin, the woman who is recruited; John Leal, the man who recruits her; and Will Kendall, a fellow student who loves Phoebe and struggles to understand her choices.

Please vote by noon on Wednesday, April 28. We will then announce the selection, where to find the book (such as the local bookseller King’s Books) and when our meetings will take place.

You can find the poll here. Happy reading and watching!
