Tacoma’s Maritime Fest expanded with new interactive activities

This year’s Maritime Fest has new interactive activities and exhibits including mermaid storytelling, jellyfish knitting, model railway display, maritime-themed Lego exhibit and a marine education center. There will also be live music, remote-controlled sailboats or tugs, design contest for kids and more. It’s all based at the Foss Waterway Seaport, 705 Dock St., Tacoma and is free to the public. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Parking is limited at the seaport, free shuttles will run from the Tacoma Dome parking garage. Bite of Seattle for food lovers at Seattle Center

It’s Seattle’s celebration of food at the annual Bite of Seattle this weekend at Seattle Center, 305 Harrison St., Seattle. There will be lots of local food vendors, live entertainment, a comedy club, kids entertainment and more. It is 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday-Sunday and free to the public. Art is the theme at the annual Gig Harbor Summer Art Festival

With more than 125 local artists showing and selling their work, the annual Gig Harbor Summer Art Festival takes over Judson Street this weekend. Sponsored by the Peninsula Art League, the Gig Harbor festival will feature children’s art activities, live music, a literary corner with authors, book illustrators and food. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. For more information go to peninsulaartleague.com.

Handcar races and community fun at Wilkeson Days festival

Tapping into its roots tied to coal and the Northern Pacific Railway, the town of Wilkeson is putting on its annual Wilkeson Days festival Saturday. With a small town feel, there will be a community parade at 11 a.m. followed by railroad handcar races, lawnmower races and a good old-fashioned tug-o-war.
