GET OUT: Things to do in the South Sound
Saturday (Aug. 1)
Pet event Woofstock takes over University of Puget Sound’s Todd Field
Bring out the family for a full day of free fun and music at Woofstock Annual Pet Adoption and Music Festival. There will be pet-related merchants, organizations and groups with information on pet services, dog agility and obedience demonstrations, and kids’ activities. Last year, 116 pets were matched with owners. It’s 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the University of Puget Sound’s Todd Field, 1500 N. Warner St., Tacoma. Go to duganfoundation.org for more information.
Music, dancing and drumming at Tacoma Bon Odori
Enjoy the sounds of traditional Japanese folk dancing and drumming at the annual Tacoma Bon Odori festival Saturday. Performers will be wearing colorful yukata summer kimonos and happy coats as they dance under the lanterns. But you won’t need traditional wear to join in the fun. Jufi Taiko and Matsuri Taiko will bring their heart-thumping drums to liven up the festival. Japanese food including Spam musubi, rice cakes, homemade pies and cookies will be available, and shaved ice, too. It is 5-9 p.m. Saturday at the Tacoma Buddhist Temple, 1717 S. Fawcett Ave., and admission is free. To find out more, call 253-627-1417.
Beers and music at Olympia Brewfest
It’s all about the brew at the annual Olympia Brewfest from 1-8:30 p.m. Saturday. With more than 30 hand-picked Northwest breweries, and more than 60 different beers, the festival will satisfy just about any beer lover’s palate. There also will be food and live music from Hillstomp, The Brown Edition and The Dogtones throughout the day. Proceeds benefit the Thurston County Chamber Foundation’s Small Business Development Program. Tickets — $25 in advance, $30 at the gate for 21-and-over only — include a commemorative mug and six samples. Additional drink tickets are available. For more information, go to olybrewfest.com.
Family fun and activities at Orting Summerfest
If you like small town festivals, then take a ride out to the Orting Summerfest from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday. The family event is a complete takeover of downtown Orting and will feature family-friendly activities including FunBallz, train rides and inflatables. There will be live entertainment on the main stage, food and vendor booths. It’s at the Orting City Park on Train Street Southwest. Admission is free.
