1989 Hit Film That Defined Romance for a Generation Turns 37 Years Old Today
The beloved 1989 teen romance film Say Anything, starring John Cusack and Ione Skye, was released into the world on this day 37 years ago. That day marked the official end to boring romantic gestures for a generation. Young love could never again be expressed with a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates. Get those out of here! Get out your boombox and your Peter Gabriel song or go home.
The movie Say Anything, written and directed by Cameron Crowe, focuses on an opposites-attract romance between two Seattle teens-charming slacker Lloyd Dobler (Cusack) and valedictorian Diane Court (Skye). Despite the fact that Diane's wrestling with being an overachieving people-pleaser and Dobler's life goal comes down to: "I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career," the two mismatched teens fall in love.

The film is not your average meet-cute movie either. The endearing script is remembered for its honest, witty banter, and compared to other teen romance films, for its smarter emotional complexity. The movie digs into some real-life, coming-of-age questions and struggles with self and family, and it's not dumbed down as silly teen angst.
In the movie's most iconic scene, Lloyd redefines modern chivalry for a generation. After Diane's father convinces her that Lloyd has inevitable low-life status, LLoyd comes fighting back. He pulls up in his Chevy Malibu outside Diane's bedroom window and holds a boombox up over his head that's bellowing Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." A new, better kind of romance was unlocked!
Here's the iconic Say Anything boombox serenade:
Say Anything was released on April 14, 1989, and its sweet, earnest depiction of first love and that boombox scene have stood the test of time. And so has Lloyd's unforgettably sad line: "I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen."
Ione Skye writes about her perspective and memories making this film in her memoir Say Everything.
