Phil Collins Earned His 1st No. 1 Hit on This Day in 1984

Phil Collins rose to the top of the charts for the first time on this day in 1984.

The English singer's timeless classic "Against All Odds" began its three-week run at the top of the singles chart on April 21, 1984, marking Collins' first number one song.

The song, which was recorded for the soundtrack of the 1984 film by the same name, starring Rachel Ward, Jeff Bridges, and James Woods, was released in February 1984.

Collins has gone on to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 six more times in the decades since with songs such as "One More Night," "Separate Lives," and "A Groovy Kind of Love."

The song earned the "You'll Be In My Heart" artist his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song that same year.

He also brought home his first Grammy Award (his third nomination) for Best Pop Vocal Performance for the beloved hit.
