BookTok Darling Named a 'Page Turner to Beat Any Reading Slump' by Goodreads
Readers cannot get enough of the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros. For anyone looking to break a reading slump or pick up a page turner, according to Goodreads, the BookTok staple and first book in the series, Fourth Wing, is the perfect one for someone to add to their bookshelf.
On top of its rabid fandom, Fourth Wing has been an unparalleled commercial success with the third book in the series being the fastest selling adult novel in the last two decades. Fourth Wing itself spent over 18 weeks at the top spot on the New York Times bestseller list upon its release in 2023, with much of its success being credited to TikTok. Videos about the viral phenomenon have been viewed over a billion times on BookTok.
What is 'Fourth Wing' and 'The Empyrean' series about?
The Empyrean series follows Violet Sorrengail, the daughter of General Sorrengail, as she enrolls in the Basgiath War College to become a dragon rider in the kingdom of Navarre. At the school, students choose to join one of four different military branches: Infantry, Healer, Scribe, or Rider.
Despite training for her entire life to be a Scribe by her late father, Violet's mother orders her to join the Riders-the wing known for being the most deadly to new recruits. Violet must bond with a dragon and survive deadly quests and competitions against other recruits of the Fourth Wing. Along the way she reconnects with her childhood crush, Dain Aetos, and meets Xaden Riorson, a powerful third year whose father was executed by Violet's mother during the Navarre's rebellion. Despite all odds, Violet bonds with dragons Tairn and Andarna, and begins to uncover the truth about the rebellion and the re-emerging revolution.
Fourth Wing has been followed by sequels Iron Flame and Onyx Storm.
When will the next book in the series be released?
On March 16th, Yarros took to her Instagram to tease the fourth book in the series. The reel has been viewed over 15 million times. No release date for the novel has been set as of yet.
In 2023, Amazon Studios acquired the rights for a television series based on Fourth Wing. Yarros will serve as an executive producer.
