Sally Field is back on the red carpet, over 40 years after her Oscar acceptance speech went down in history.

The legendary film and television actress, 79, is known for roles ranging from Mrs. Doubtfire and Forrest Gump to Norma Rae and Absence of Malice. What Happened During Sally Field's Famous Oscar Speech?

At the 57th Academy Awards in 1985, Field scored the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for her role in the 1984 film Places in the Heart. Presented by the legendary actor Robert Duvall, it was Field's unusual speech that won the hearts of America.

"I owe a lot to the cast, to my players, to Lindsay and John and Danny and Ed and Amy and my little friends Gennie and Yankton. I owe a lot to my family for holding me together and loving me and having patience with this obsession of me. But I want to say thank you to you," Field shared. "I haven't had an orthodox career and I've wanted more than anything to have your respect. The first time I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it. And I can't deny the fact that you like me. Right now, you like me! Thank you."
