Meryl Streep Speaks Out on Missing 2026 Met Gala After ‘Devil Wears Prada 2' Release

Meryl Streep, a three-time Academy Award-winning actress, is one of the most prominent women in Hollywood, yet she has never attended the annual Met Gala. According to her representatives, this year will be no different.

Following the May 1 premiere of Streep's latest film, The Devil Wears Prada 2-the sequel to the 2006 cult classic-fans had high hopes that the star would make her debut appearance at the event. In the film, Streep reprises her role as Miranda Priestly, the calculated fashionista and editor-in-chief for Runway magazine. Streep's character is famously inspired by Anna Wintour, fashion revolutionary, editor-in-chief of Vogue and director of the Met Gala.

Since the release of the first film, Streep and Wintour have nurtured a friendship. The pair has collaborated on several projects throughout the last 20 years. In 2020, Streep was announced as a co-chair for the Met Gala alongside Wintour, but the event was cancelled following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Monday morning, Streep's representative reached out to People magazine, confirming that Streep would miss another Gala. The representative revealed that while Streep has never attended the event, receiving an invitation was never the issue; she simply does not believe she would fit in.

"Meryl has been invited to the Met Gala for many years but has never attended. While she appreciates Vogue, Anna [Wintour] and her incredible imagination and stamina-it has never quite been her scene," Streep's representative said.

During the press run for The Devil Wears Prada 2, Streep spoke about further involving herself in the fashion world. On April 8, the actress attended her first fashion show in Milan, Italy for Milan Fashion Week. She opened up about the experience with Andy Cohen on the SiriusXM series, Front Row.

"I was so excited," Streep said. "You know me in my real life. I have never been to a fashion show, clearly. It was really exciting, and I didn't know it was so theatrical."

With her latest intrigue in the fashion space, perhaps it will not be long before Streep finally graces the Met Gala red carpet.
