'80s Rock Icon, 76, Releases 'Nostalgic' New Single Fans Are Calling 'the Right Song at the Right Time'

If there's one thing Peter Gabriel fans can count on in this unpredictable world, it's a new song from the legendary musician every month (at least for the rest of this year).

Since the beginning of 2026, the Grammy winner has been releasing singles from his upcoming album o/i in the same manner as his 2023 album, i/o, dropping a new song on each full moon of the year. January brought the first single, "Been Undone," followed by "Put the Bucket Down" in February, "What Lies Ahead" in March and "Till Your Mind Is Shining" in April.

Last week, on May 1, Gabriel released the fifth full moon single from o\i: "Won't Stand Down."

In a statement on his website, Gabriel called "Won't Stand Down" a "song to encourage some sort of activism."

"I had originally thought about trying to create some music for The Elders.org, who are an extraordinary group of people," Gabriel explained, referring to the human rights organization founded by Nelson Mandela.

"Their currency is not based on military power, economic power or political power, but just the moral authority they have from having lived extraordinary, selfless lives," the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer continued. "That's something which I wanted to talk about, write about and encourage, because it's pretty dark out there in lots of places and I think we need people who can just nudge both us and our leaders and keep alive some basic values of justice, compassion and democracy - a hope that can help us start envisioning a just, peaceful and fairer world."

Gabriel went on to say that he thinks "people generally respond much better to positive pictures of what's coming than they do when they are bombarded and scared by negative ones."

"We are much more likely to engage if we feel hope," he pointed out. "Right now, we don't see so many positive visions of the future, at least they're not being projected so strongly as the negative, so I think it's really important that we start looking for visions to which we can aspire and looking for people who can provide that."

Fans on YouTube were beyond grateful for the new song, with many praising its "nostalgic" feel.

"When you sing it is your soul that powers your voice. Your music has taken us on an incredible journey over the years. In these times you are here to make art, it helps, it heals. Thank you," wrote one fan.

"The right song at the right time!" declared a second person, adding, "Thank you Peter, for standing up for the planet and its people. They need you."

"The very moment I played this my body started dancin' and flowin' and then I'm crying because it's just sounds soo good!!!" another commenter admitted. "Thank you for this moment in time that you just shared with us, Peter!"

Just like the other tunes we've heard from o\i thus far, two versions of "Won't Stand Down" will be released: a bright-side mix by Mark "Spike" Stent and a dark-side mix by Tchad Blake.
