Fans Still Can't Get Over George O'Malley's Death on ‘Grey's Anatomy'
For many longtime fans of Grey's Anatomy, few moments in the show's history hit quite as hard as the loss of George O'Malley.
Played by T.R. Knight, George started as one of the original interns alongside Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, and Alex Karev. While George was often underestimated early on (earning the nickname "007" after freezing during surgery) the character gradually evolved, becoming a fan favorite.
George's death occurred during the season 5 finale and season 6 premiere. In the episode "Now or Never," which originally aired May 14, 2009, George was struck by a bus after jumping in front of it to save a stranger. The accident left him so badly injured that his fellow doctors couldn't identify him at first. The heartbreak came when the unidentified "John Doe" patient traced "007" into Meredith's hand, signaling who he really was.
The following episode, "Good Mourning," which aired Sept. 24, 2009, confirmed George died from complications after surgery due to massive brain swelling.
Part of what made the moment so emotional was its timing. George had just decided to join the U.S. Army as a trauma surgeon before the show abruptly changed course, and 15 years later, fans still aren't over it.

"Why in the world did I subject myself to the death of George O'Malley again on Grey's Anatomy? 😪😪," one fan wrote on Threads in March.
Another insisted, "Why did George have to die after he joined the army? He could've been a doctor with them and the writers could've referenced O'Malley and he couldn't been a passive character until some guest appearance or something. HE DIDN'T HAVE TO DIE."
"Gonna rewatch grey's just to feel something for the zillionth time. ya'll killed george o'malley for no reason," one X user stated in February.

"Every time I get to the episode where George O'Malley dies on Grey's Anatomy, I cry. Shonda had absolutely no reason to kill him like that," another declared.
But George did eventually make a comeback in the show-sort of. In season 15's "Flowers Grow Out of My Grave," the character briefly appeared through archived footage. He returned again in Season 17, appearing in Meredith's dreamlike beach visions while she battled COVID-19.
That comeback served as a reminder that even after countless shocking deaths and cast exits across Grey's Anatomy's 22-season run, George was one of the most impactful.
