1981 Classic, Censored by MTV, Became a Record-Breaking No. 1 Hit

In 1981, a bold new pop song helped transform one of music's most recognizable stars-but not everyone was ready for it.

"Physical" by Olivia Newton-John, became one of the biggest hits of the early 1980s, spending 10 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, which tied the record, and setting what was then a record for the longest-running chart-topper of the decade. It also still holds the record for longest-running number-one single by an Australian artist on the Billboard charts.

Driven by its pulsing beat, playful energy and unforgettable chorus, the song marked a dramatic shift for Newton-John, who had previously been known for a softer, wholesome image through songs like "Have You Never Been Mellow" and her role as Sandy in Grease.

But despite becoming a massive commercial success, "Physical" also sparked controversy almost immediately after its release.

Several radio stations across North America banned the song because of its suggestive lyrics, particularly lines like "There's nothing left to talk about unless it's horizontally" and "Let me hear your body talk." Some stations considered the lyrics too provocative for airplay, while others edited portions of the track before playing it.

The song's music video also generated attention for its sexual innuendo and gym-themed storyline featuring Newton-John surrounded by men working out in tight athletic clothing. MTV even edited the video's ending during its early run.

Newton-John herself initially worried the song might be too provocative and was nervous about making an accompanying music video, telling the Miami Herald in an interview, "I told my manager, ‘Let's not put it out, but he said it was too late; it had already gone to radio and was 10 weeks at No. 1."

She told Entertainment Tonight on the 40th anniversary of the song's release, "A dear friend of mine wrote the song and I thought, 'This is a great song!' And I recorded it with John Farrar, who's my producer and also my friend, and after it was finished, that's when I freaked out. I went, 'I never even thought about the double entendre here!' I called my manager and said, 'We have to, we have to kill it! Let's stop it because I think I've gone too far.' And he said, '[It's] already on the charts, doll. It's doing really well, we can't stop it.'"

She added, "I'm finding that very often the things you are most afraid of or tentative about doing are the things you need to do. So I'm very thrilled that I didn't pull it off the charts."

Instead, the controversy only seemed to fuel public curiosity.

"Physical" became Newton-John's biggest career hit and Billboard later ranked it as the No. 1 song of the 1980s. The track also helped redefine her image, launching a more confident and playful pop era that continued with hits like "Make a Move on Me" and "Twist of Fate."

More than four decades later, "Physical" remains one of the defining songs of the 1980s, remembered not only for its infectious hook, but for the controversy that surrounded its rise to the top of the charts.
