Britney Spears Rewrote ‘SNL' History 26 Years Ago With a Record-Breaking TV Moment

Over two decades ago, Britney Spears made her Saturday Night Live debut, but the Princess of Pop not only delivered a jaw-dropping appearance, she also had a record-breaking moment.

At the height of the music icon's Y2K pop superstardom, she appeared on the 19th episode of the long-running show's season 25 as a musical guest and host.

On May 13, 2000, Spears performed her hit single "Oops, I Did It Again" in a vibrant corset crop top with a pink-and-purple tie-dye design paired with matching low-rise flared pants, which was her signature style.

As for her second song, she sang another timeless track, "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know," and stunned viewers in her black tube top paired with low-rise shiny pants.

At 18, the award-winning singer's appearance not only drew massive viewership but also made history as the youngest person to pull "double duty" in a single episode.

Deion Sanders broke the record as the then-27-year-old who appeared as a guest and host on SNL on February 18, 1995, where he performed his hit track "Must Be The Money" and "It's On."

Britney Spears Turned Controversy Into Comedy During a Memorable SNL Appearance

During the peak of her career, the pop star's stardom was hounded by controversies and accusations but she found a way to address the issue in a playful way.

Spears showcased her comedic timing by not only fully embracing the sketch but also using the moment to cleverly clear up the rumors by poking fun at the lip-syncing and breast implant accusations.

The singer began her monologue by defending herself in a lighthearted manner.

"This is a perfect place for me to clear up some crazy, crazy rumors I kept hearing about myself, like that I can't perform without lip-syncing, which is not true. See, when I went to the Grammy Awards and sang 'Baby One More Time'... I sang all the lead vocals live. It wasn't on tape," she said, but as she delivered the line about the award ceremony, her voice was replaced by a mismatched pre-recorded voiceover while completely pretending to speak with a straight face.

Moreover, she also brought up the accusation about going under the knife, noting, "The one about my boobs being fake-that is just ridiculous! I mean, come on, I'm 18 and I'm still growing, you know?"

Following her appearance that caused a significant spike in TV ratings, Spears made three more guest spots, one in 2002 to promote her movie Crossroads and the last two in 2003.
