Northlands Worldbook Expands Dungeons & Dragons With Norse Mythology, New Species, And Epic Frozen Realms

Kobold Press has spent years building a reputation as one of the most respected third-party creators in the tabletop RPG space, and Northlands Worldbook is one of its most ambitious setting releases to date. Now available through D&D Beyond, the sourcebook introduces a massive Norse-inspired campaign overlay filled with new character options, monsters, locations, factions, and worldbuilding tools designed to bring mythological northern adventures into any fantasy campaign.

Rather than functioning as a completely isolated campaign setting, Northlands Worldbook is designed as a flexible overlay that Dungeon Masters can integrate into existing worlds. According to Kobold Press, players can explore frozen kingdoms, sail across dangerous seas, confront dragons and giants, and interact with powerful gods and ancient forces rooted in northern mythology. The book heavily draws inspiration from Viking culture, Norse legends, and mythological storytelling traditions.

One of the biggest attractions of the sourcebook is the amount of player-facing content included. The book adds eight new subclasses, including options such as the Nornbound Cleric and Trickster Warlock, alongside nine playable species. Giantkin and bearfolk are among the most notable additions, giving players new ways to create characters tied directly to the setting's themes of fate, survival, and legendary heroism.

Combat and worldbuilding also receive significant attention. The book includes more than 50 new monsters, nine major factions, and over 80 weapons, spells, and magical items. New systems for sailing, ship combat, reputation, prophecy, rune magic, and downtime activities help reinforce the setting's identity beyond simply adding northern-themed creatures and locations.

A Major Expansion For Norse Inspired Campaigns

Part of what makes Northlands Worldbook stand out is how much support it provides for Dungeon Masters. In addition to locations and creatures, the sourcebook includes prophecy generators, NPC resources, ships, mounts, and various worldbuilding tools designed to help create campaigns that feel tied to fate and mythology. These systems aim to capture the atmosphere of legendary sagas where destiny often shapes the path of heroes as much as their own choices.

Lead designer Brian Suskind described the project as a campaign overlay that can function on its own or be added to virtually any existing fantasy setting. That flexibility may be one of the book's greatest strengths, particularly for groups that want Norse-inspired adventures without abandoning their current worlds.

For players and Dungeon Masters looking for a fantasy setting built around icy seas, giant kingdoms, dragon hunts, fate-driven storytelling, and Norse mythology, Northlands Worldbook offers one of the most comprehensive modern supplements currently available. Its combination of character options, setting material, monsters, and campaign tools makes it far more than a simple regional guide. And if you want to immediately put the content to the test, consider also getting the Northland Sagas adventure module as well.
