Video Interview: "Out of Order" Star Brandon Routh (Dances With Films Fest)

Brandon Routh stars in “Out of Order,” a new indie courtroom comedy that evokes the screwball antics of classic Hollywood. Routh channels equal parts Jack Benny and Jack Lemmon as John Slater, a lawyer who finds himself embroiled in a scheme where he works at two opposing law firms at the same time, using a surprisingly convincing blonde wig to adopt an alter ego as a slick, big-city lawyer going up against his true self at a scrappy little firm. When the big case ends up going to trial, however, the charade gets tougher and trickier, much to the audience’s delight. Throw in a love triangle and some slapstick physical comedy, and the result is a lighthearted, low-stakes family-friendly fare, and it’s sure to leave a smile on your face. Routh delivers a wonderful performance bolstered by supporting turns from Sam Huntington, Brooke Shields, Luis Guzman, Sandra Bernhardt, and more.

The film has its Los Angeles premiere on June 22 at the TCL Chinese Theatres as part of the Dances with Films festival. Tickets are on sale now (buy them here!). The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Routh and director Guy Jacobson.

As I said, Brandon Routh shines in the film. He’s charming and lovable (not to mention a total hunk!), even when scrambling to maintain his facade as two lawyers on opposite sides of the same case. If you’re a young superhero fan, you might remember Routh from his time in The CW’s Arrowverse. He played Ray Palmer, The Atom, on “Arrow” before migrating to “Legends of Tomorrow,” where he was a series regular until he was written out of the show during Season 5 (and I’m still mad about it). If you’re a slightly older superhero fan, then you definitely remember Routh for his leading role in 2006’s “Superman Returns,” where he played the title character in a sequel to the Christopher Reeve films of the 1970s and 80s.

I had the opportunity to chat with Routh about his work on “Out of Order,” as well as his larger career. He talks about returning to the role of Superman during the Arrowverse “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event, and shares some stories about his time on “Legends of Tomorrow.” He also shares some behind-the-scenes insight about shooting “Out of Order” in New York City and playing basketball with Sam Huntington before they were both cast in “Superman Returns” all those years ago.

Check out our entire conversation below, and if you feel I didn’t ask the right questions, you can go to the L.A. premiere and Q&A on June 22 to see Brandon yourself and ask him yourself.
