Tacoma galleries offer up new art exhibits

Take in three exhibits now open in Tacoma

▪ The Korean American Artists of Washington State exhibit is on display in the Handforth Gallery, Tacoma Public Library, 1102 Tacoma Ave. S., Tacoma. It will be on exhibit until Oct. 30. It is free to check out during normal library hours. For more information call 253-292-2001.

▪ The American Art Company, 1126 Broadway, Tacoma, is currently showing Marshall Johnson’s "Past & Present" work that spans a lifetime of observing the Great Northwest. It will be on display through Oct. 31 and can be seen during business hours; 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays. To find out more go to americanartco.com.

▪ The Tahoma Center Gallery, located in Catholic Community Services, 1323 S. Yakima Ave., Tacoma, is displaying a collection of works from students in the digital design program at Pierce College. It features photographs, illustrations and digital paintings from thirty current students and recent graduates. The gallery is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays.

Cartoonist Stephan Pastis comes to Theatre on the Square

Meet author and cartoonist Stephan Pastis as he presents his new collection “Pearls Gets Sacrificed: A Pearls Before Swine Treasury.” Pastis has been drawing and writing “Pearls Before Swine” for about 15 years and it appears in more than 650 newspapers worldwide. See him at 7 p.m. Monday at Theatre on the Square, 915 Broadway, Tacoma. It is a free community event. For more information call 253-591-5894.

What’s happening at the Washington State Fair

Patti LaBelle will be joining the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra in the concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Grand Stand. Tickets are $28-$55 and include fair admission.

Gate hours are 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $12.50 adults, $9 ages 6-18 and seniors 62 and older, free for kids 5 and younger. Parking in the fair lots is $10 Mondays-Fridays and $15 Saturdays and Sundays.

Transit options include:

Pierce Transit’s Fair Express service begins daily at 9:15 a.m. with the last trip leaving the fair at 11:30 p.m. Service is provided from the Tacoma Mall, Lakewood Towne Center and South Hill Mall; parking is free at these sites.

Fares are $2 one way for adults, $0.75 for seniors and disabled and youth 18 and younger. Up to four children, ages 13 and younger, may ride free when accompanied by a fare-paying customer.

Sound Transit Express Route 578 also runs between Seattle and Puyallup daily.
