University of Puget Sound highlight of volkssport walk

Discover the University of Puget Sound campus and the surrounding area and join the Capitol Volkssport Club and its Tacoma UPS Walk Thursday. The 10k and 11k options will be on sidewalks and paved paths through quiet neighborhoods, a city park and the university campus. It is rated easy. Meet at the Morgan Branch YMCA, 1002 S. Tacoma’s Arts Month kickoff and awards at The Armory

Explore the arts all month long at Tacoma Arts Month featuring activities through October showcasing the art scene in Tacoma. Kicking off the month-long celebration, the Opening Party and AMOCAT Awards is at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Tacoma Armory, 715 S. 11th St., Tacoma. The line-up of entertainment includes music by Ken Jacobsen, contemporary dance by the BareFoot Collective, Samoan Village Dance by Asia Pacific Cultural Center, poetry by Tacoma Poet Laureate Cathy Nguyen, pop-up multi-media art exhibits by Christopher Jordan, Isaac Olsen, Jennifer Chushcoff, Nichole Rathburn, Janet Marcavage, Tim and April Norris, Terese Cuff, Elizabeth Gahan, Diana Leigh Surma and Judd Cohen. Poet Christine Deavel at Gig Harbor Library

Enjoy the Fall Poetry Series at the Gig Harbor Library, 4424 Point Fosdick Drive NW with featured writer/author Christine Deavel. She is the co-owner of Open Books: A Poem Emporium and her collection of Woodnote 2011 received the 2012 Washington State Book Award. Come out for the 7 p.m. reading Thursday. Season opener for Pacific Northwest Ballet “See the Music”

Make it a night at the ballet by taking in “See the Music,” Pacific Northwest Ballet’s season opener. It is a triple bill featuring Christopher Wheeldon’s “Tide Harmonic, George Balanchine’s “Prodigal Sond” and Jerome Robbings “The Concert.” Performances are at McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer St. Seattle with showtimes of 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Tickets start at $30 and are available online at pnb.org.
