Tacoma Greek Festival opening Friday celebrates 54 years

In its 54th year, the Tacoma Greek Festival kicks off Friday (Oct. 2) and will continue through the weekend. This highly popular fixture festival will feature folkloric dance performers, church tours, music and of course the food. Enjoy authentic Greek cuisine from entrees to bakery items there will be every type of Greek food you can think of. Hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, food is additional charge. It’s all happening at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 1523 S. Yakima Ave., Tacoma.

Candlelight tour explores life in the 1850s

It’s that time of year to make plans to attend the Candlelight Tour, one of Fort Nisqually’s favorite events. See history as it was originally seen, by candlelight and campfire, when the fort comes alive with costumed actors as the reenact daily life of the 1850s at the Hudson’s Bay Company. Tours are every 15 minutes starting at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Advance tickets are required —$12 adults, $8 kids 4-12 years old. Call 253-591-5339 to order yours.

Kingston Trio plays Kentwood Performing Arts Center

First gaining popularity in the 1960s, The Kingston Trio is known as the music group that helped launch the folk revival of the 1960s, starting in San Francisco. Their hit recording of “Tom Dooey” sold more three million copies, and the group released 19 albums that made Billboard’s top 100. Still playing and touring the group will be coming to Kentwood Performing Arts Center, 25800 164th Ave. SE, Covington, for a 7:30 p.m. performance Friday. Tickets are $30 adults, $28 seniors and $15 youth and are available online at kentwa.gov/arts/spotlight.

Park stewardship volunteer activities at Snake Lake

Chip in by volunteering for Snake Lake Habitat restoration work Friday. Join the Tacoma Nature Center, 1919 S. Tyler St., Tacoma, as it cares for the park by removing invasive plant species, replanting areas with native plants and helping those plants thrive. No experience is necessary; come dressed for the weather and be prepared to get dirty. Children must be accompanied by adults. Hours are 9 a.m.-noon. For more information, call 253-591-6439.
