‘West Side Story’ at Tacoma Musical Playhouse

Tacoma’s west-side theater (Tacoma Musical Playhouse) continues its critically-acclaimed production of “West Side Story,” the musical that unites Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” with Leonard Bernstein’s beloved score and an adaptation of the original Jerome Robbins choreography by TMP director Jon Rake. 8 p.m. July 24, 25, 31, Aug. 1; 2 p.m. July 25, 26, Aug. 1 and 2. $29/$27 senior, military, student/$20 ages 12 and under. Chinese art at TCC gallery

On through August at The Gallery at Tacoma Community College is an exhibit by the Washington Overseas Chinese Artists Association of work by member artists in a variety of styles, media and artistic traditions. Powellswood storytelling fest

Powellswood Garden combines with local storytelling guilds to host its fourth annual storytelling festival this weekend, featuring mime artist Antonio Rocha, Asian storyteller Motoko, playwright Kevin Kling, “Affrilachian” teller Lyn Ford and Southern tale teller Donald Davis all telling stories from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, plus food, drinks and ice cream from Ice Cream Social. The festival also includes adult workshops 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Saturday and children’s activities on Friday. July 24-25. Tacoma Actors Repertory brings Christmas in July

Christmas in July? That’ll happen this week as new theater group Tacoma Actors Repertory Theatre offers a staged reading of the biting holiday comedy “The Farndale Avenue Housing Estates Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Production of ‘A Christmas Carol.’” A fundraiser for the new group, the performance gives a sneak peek into the 2015 TART season and includes live music, refreshments, prizes and an ugly holiday sweater contest. 7 p.m. July 27. $15.
