Grammy-nominated pianist Duane Hulbert will celebrate 30 years on the faculty at the University of Puget Sound with a recital of virtuosic works spanning three centuries: Bach’s Toccata in D major, Beethoven’s Piano Sonata no. 32 in C minor, Ravel’s “Gaspard de la Nuit” and Rachmaninoff preludes and études, with a multimedia light display designed by UPS theater professor Kurt Walls. 7:30 p.m. Friday (Oct. 2). Choral Arts brings new ‘passion’ to Tacoma

Seattle’s Choral Arts brings their season-opening concert to Tacoma, including David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio “The Little Match Girl Passion.” A minimalist, yet lush retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen tale, “Passion” explores the concept of transformation through retelling of suffering, and is paired with works by Ildebrando Pizzetti and Jake Runestad. 4 p.m. Sunday. $25 general, $23 senior and military, $10 student. Norway’s Stavanger choirs come to PLU

Choirs from Scandinavia’s oldest cathedral will sing a free concert Sunday at Pacific Lutheran University’s Lagerquist Hall. Directed by the husband-and-wife team of Oddgeir Kjetilstad and Jorunn Lovise Husan, the boys and girls choirs from Stavanger Cathedral in Norway will perform with Ivan Sarajishvili, the organist from the Lutheran cathedral, which dates to the early 1200s. 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Tacoma Actors Repertory Theatre opens first season

Tacoma Actors Rep, the city’s new professional company, opens its first season Wednesday in the historic Armory building with a rotation of two plays. Jeffrey Hatcher’s “Three Viewings,” which tells interconnected stories around a funeral home in Pennsylvania, begins Wednesday, and “(title of show,)” the Broadway musical about two guys writing a musical, begins Oct. 14.
