Piano students will play with professional trio
For the piano teachers in the Tacoma chapter of the Washington State Music Teachers Association, it isn’t enough to give lessons. Music also includes performance and community. Sp the association will put on its 21st annual “Joy of Piano Trios” festival this weekend in Annie Wright’s Great Hall, allowing local piano students to experience playing chamber music with professionals.
More than 90 piano students from local studios will perform piano trios with violinist Janet Utterback-Peck and cellist Brad Hawkins in a series of six recitals, some with the audience in Halloween costumes.
While string, brass and percussion students get many chances to play in a group setting, it’s harder for pianists, who mostly learn solo repertoire or accompany other solo instruments.
