Playing on the Fritts: Organ concert at St. Andrew’s Episcopal
This Sunday St. Andrew’s Episcopal celebrates its new-ish organ — made by Tacoma builder Paul Fritts and relocated from Grace Lutheran late last year — with the first of three concerts in a new recital series.
The one-hour concert also celebrates the church’s 125th anniversary.
Husband-and-wife organist team Naomi Shiga, St. Andrew’s music director, and Jonathan Wohlers, artist in residence, will honor the Lutheran and Anglican heritage of the organ’s original and new homes with German works for Advent and music by English organists, including a duet by Samuel Wesley.
The series continues in January with a recital by James David Christie, chairman of organ at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio and an international recitalist and guest professor; and in April with a performance by Makiko Hayashima, a Japanese organist in demand for recitals and masterclasses around the world. The series will conclude with an international organ composition competition, of which the winning piece will be played on the series next year.
