A romantic Valentine’s concert from Olympia Symphony and Angie Zhang
The Olympia Symphony will offer classical music-style romance on Valentine’s Day with “Lovers Love Great Melodies,” a concert of 19th-century music and dance, plus special hotel rates, dining and more.
The orchestra’s date night includes lush, passionate music: Mascagni’s famous Intermezzo from “Cavalleria Rusticana,” Howard Hanson’s “Romantic” Symphony No. 2 (“one long Snickers bar of melody,” according to director Huw Edwards’ program notes), Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and the Rose Waltz from Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake,” including onstage dancers from Ballet Northwest.
Piano soloist Angie Zhang, originally from Portland, first played with the symphony when she was 12, and is currently a student at The Juilliard School, winning fellowships and competitions, including the recent Juilliard Concerto Competition. This will be the 19-year-old’s fifth performance with Edwards. She will be featured in the Rachmaninov piece.
