Tacoma’s newest Sonic Drive-In is officially opening.

The latest location opens at 10 a.m. Thursday (August 31) at 9810 Pacific Ave. S. That’s not far from the state Route 512 interchange at Pacific Avenue.

The national burger chain also has Pierce County locations in Tacoma, Bonney Lake and Puyallup.

This Sonic will have 16 drive-in car stalls with carhop attendants. There’s also a drive-thru window.

Sorry, rain avoiders, there’s no indoor seating inside the building, but there’s a covered patio with five tables that seat eight diners each. But here’s something interesting, “The new drive-in location has a fully covered patio that will be walled in with glass and will contain a canopy heater during the colder months for the comfort of our guests,” said Jake Nelson, director of operations of Serj Drive-Ins Washington, which operates the new Sonic.

Sonic is known for its pellet ice, Cherry Limeade and restaurant workers who roll your burgers and fries to your car while on skates.

Those familiar with that neighborhood might ask, “Isn’t that area already home to a great burger destination?”

It sure is.

Nearby Frugals is at 10727 Pacific Ave. S. I rated Frugals in the Top 10 for its value in my big, giant cheeseburger tour of 2015. That tour included 27 stops at independent burger restaurants across Pierce County. Read here for a tour of independently owned burger restaurants that slap together a great cheeseburger.
