Take me out to the ballgame … drive-thru? Cheney opens for food to-go

For two weekends only, Cheney Stadium will open a drive-thru for contactless pickup of brats and fish and chips.

The Tacoma Rainiers have partnered with Ivar’s, the stadium’s food and beverage distributor, to open Cheneyville Grab N’ Go this Thursday to Saturday and next in lieu of a season canceled due to the coronavirus.

Guests can preorder beverages and individual brats, hot dogs and pulled pork sandwiches — or you can feed a crowd with a meal package, which all come with Rainiers souvenirs (hats!) while supplies last.

“We’re continuing to look for creative ways to engage our fans until we can host them for games again,” said AJ Garcia, media relations director for We R Tacoma, noting the positive response to the July 3 fireworks show.

“We’re trying to give our fans as much of the Rainiers experience as we can even without baseball, and great ballpark food is an important part of that experience,” he told The News Tribune in an email.

Family meals include four brats or cheeseburgers with two sides of classic chicken wings ($49), two extra-large pizzas with chicken wings ($65), and six pieces of fish with chips, two sides of coleslaw and two bowls of clam chowder ($69).

When you place an order online or through the ChowNow app, you can pick a 15-minute time slot for pickup.

“While we can’t provide the full experience this season, we hope that offering Tacoma some of our best-selling food items will get people over to Cheney Stadium for a fun and easy family meal,” said team president Aaron Artman in a release.

The process is set up to limit contact, so guests are asked to remain in their cars and let stadium staff deliver the food to you — and that you enjoy the food at home.

The pickup point will be located through the 19th Street entrance. Follow Huntington Way to the south parking lot, near the Mary Bridge Children’s Family pavilion. Signs will point you toward the Tyler Street exit.
