There is something deeply gratifying about having a beer outside while rain patters on the corrugated plastic roof above. The scenario improves if you’ve dressed appropriately — an extra layer, a scarf perhaps, smart footwear — and if the business has equipped its outdoor dining space with heaters.

What was once a pandemic necessity transformed into a welcome addition. Ensuring the patio is viable year-round in some cases doubles capacity; in others, it expands options for unseasonably sunny days.

That’s why we compiled a list of more than 100 of the best patios in Tacoma, Pierce County and the South Sound — updated for Winter 2021 and now featuring a detailed map.

It might not seem like patio season, but at many of these bars and restaurants, it’s always patio season.
