Lumpia World opens in Northeast Tacoma on Saturday
Lumpia World’s fourth restaurant will open Saturday in Browns Point.
The restaurant at the Lighthouse IGA in Browns Point opens at 11 a.m., but will operate only during evening hours Tuesday-Friday (opening each of those days at 5 p.m.). On weekends, the restaurant will serve from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
Expect to see the restaurant’s specialty, lumpia, prominently featured. That’s the Filipino staple that made the business regionally famous. Lumpia, for those who are unfamiliar, is a crispy, fried spring roll similar to a Chinese egg roll. Lumpia World sells several versions, including lemongrass chicken; ginger pork; ground steak, vegetarian and vegan. The restaurant also serves the Filipino dishes adobo and pancit.
The business got its start selling lumpia from its roving food trailer at the Tacoma Farmers Market in 2006. In the early days, owners Derrick and Eleanor Ellis rolled 1,000 lumpia a week; but now roll up to 10,000 every week.
The Browns Point Lumpia World is the second stationary location for the business. The first stationary outpost opened in Federal Way in 2013. The business also recently added a second mobile food truck to serve at area farmers markets and other food truck hot spots. On Friday, Lumpia World will make its first appearance at the T-Town Food Trucks gathering on Market Street in downtown Tacoma ( read more about that here).
