Free Cup Friday: Infinite Soups in Tacoma serves fall cheer in the form of a free cup of autumnal yum
Just in time for the autumnal chill, Infinite Soups is launching a handful of new Fall flavors.
And the small, plucky business - a micro niche restaurant that serves wonderfully executed soup and only soup - is starting what the restaurant's owners are calling Free Cup Friday. Starting Sept. 10, anyone who asks for will receive a free cup of soup every Friday at the Sanford & Son location of Infinite Soups (not the Tacoma Avenue location). And the free cup offer is good every Friday until December.
“We’re doing it because my niece who works down there (at the Sanford & Son Infinite location), she’s excited because school is back in session and she wanted to do something nice for students,” said owner Wendy Clapp, who runs the two locations of Infinite Soups with husband Todd DeShazo and daughter Laura Adams.
“Todd and I were talking last night and we were talking about the economy and how hard it is right now,” said Clapp late last week by phone. And thus came the idea for Free Cup Friday.
Soup will be served until they run out, so get there early for the Friday freebies.
Here are new soups cooking at Infinite Soups this fall, available at both locations:
Autumnal Sweet Potato: A sweet potato soup flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg, and finished with cream. The texture is creamy, but with chunks of potatoes.
My Yammy Vice: This is DeShazo’s creation. A more blended, creamy version of the Autumnal Sweet Potato soup, but made with yams. “It’s more creamy, with cinnamon and a little more nutmeg. When I make Autumnal Sweet Potato, I leave chunks in there, but he smooths it until it’s creamy. You can mix it with eggs and put it in a pie crust, it’s good,” said Clapp.
Yam and Bacon: This combines yams with bits of bacon, onions and cream. “You’ve got to put on your outer layer of fat for the winter,” said Clapp. It’s a hearty soup.
Chanterelle Dreams: “When our chanterelle guy starts bringing me those, we’ll start making the soup. It has wine, thyme, lots of chanterelle mushrooms. … I want you to know you’re getting that big, nice mouth feel of chanterelles. And heavy cream. It’s kind of a version of our Mushroom Marsala,” said Clapp.
Viv’s Autumn Sunshine: This soup is an homage to Clapp’s grandmother, who helped the trio open the first Infinite Soups (she has since passed away). “It has maple sausage and acorn squash. “She used to make this dish every fall, corn squash stuffed with maple sausage and cornbread stuffing,” said Clapp.
Other soups to try: Butternut squash, pumpkin and the return of other Fall favorites.
