Bar breakfasts: The Swiss shifts from beer to bacon on weekend mornings
Bar breakfasts are one of my favorite ways to welcome my weekend and plenty of nightspots around town now offer sunrise dining on Saturdays and Sundays. The Swiss is the latest night spot to join the growing crowd of early morning weekend hash slingers. The Tacoma bar will begin offering breakfast this Saturday.
I like stopping by bars for breakfast because the environs usually are interesting (read: gritty) and the crowds are down the street at that lousy chain restaurant eating pancakes made from a mix. Bar cooks have an advantage over the competition - they know their way around the griddle and fryer and they're not afraid of a little bacon grease. I eschew the beer for bacon on my dining excursions (because day drinking always gets me in trouble), but I know that most bars where I've dined have specialty breakfast cocktails and all offer red beer - a combination of suds and tomato juice. I'll stick with oj and coffee.
The Swiss has a menu heavy on eggs and lots from the griddle - it's brief and well priced solidly under $9. Here's something cool, if you're the sort of parent who doesn't mind a tyke tagging along to a place that's known as a bar, there's a kids menu with $5.25-$5.75 meals that look a step up from the usual offerings. Check out the menu below.
What about those other bar breakfasts? Earlier this year, I wrote a long piece exploring bar breakfasts. I found bacon pancakes at Puget Sound Pizza, an outstanding braised rib scramble at Masa, Cap'n Crunch French toast at Dirty Oscar's Annex, really good eggs Benedict at the Harmon Brewery and one of the best chicken fried steaks in town at The Hub. For the full report of five bars with great breakfasts - read this story.
