Tacoma's Flying Boots plugging away at a reopening
Tacoma’s Flying Boots & Wings is at least a few weeks from reopening, or at least that’s what manager Candie King predicts. The Lincoln neighborhood bar and restaurant was expected to be open by now, but an electrical panel upgrade delayed those plans. Other kitchen upgrades had to be made, too.
Flying Boots had operated for 75 years at its 38th Street location in the Lincoln neighborhood until it closed in 2013 with a bit of a ruckus after patrons took restaurant mementos the last night of business; the business also was vandalized after it closed. (read more in this story)
The new owners, who operate a bar in Renton, have remodeled the building. The floor plan shifted to create a bigger bar area, which means the restaurant will be 21 and older only, said King, who previously worked at Gator’s in Kent.
Decor changes have been made, too, but those tabletop jukeboxes of yesteryear and the historical Flying Boots and the Spur Room sign - a visual marker for that neighborhood - remain. King said she’ll have someone in this week working on the sign to get it in operating order.
Bar food fans should take note that Flying Boots will specialize in wings. About a dozen configurations will be on the menu in order sizes of 6, 12 and 24. Sauce choices range from the typical buffalo to chipotle and extra spicy; Thai peanut, butter garlic and sweet chili sauce also will be options. Breading and sauces are optional on the wings. Also find boneless wings on the menu.
