Southern Exposure, a restaurant merging southern style comfort food with Caribbean touches, opened Saturday in Tacoma's Sixth Avenue neighborhood. The restaurant is adjacent to Marrow Kitchen Bar in a space most recently occupied by It's Amore/Pastiche, which closed in May 2013.
Southern Exposure is the venture of two sisters - Gloria Gentry and Angela Hernandez. The sisters previously dabbled in starting a catering company (it never fully materialized), but this is their first restaurant.
Hernandez described the menu as a blend of casual southern comfort eating merged with her husband's Puerto Rican heritage. The sisters grew up in North Carolina and have designed a menu offering that state's most famous dish - pulled pork sandwiches topped with slaw.
Sixth Avenue already is home to southern cooking - Southern Kitchen has operated near that oddly shaped intersection at Sixth and Sprague for two decades.
