New restaurants: BYO teriyaki bowls, whiskey bar, boba and more coffee near Puyallup

Plenty of restaurants, bars and coffee shops are expanding around East Pierce County, from Sunrise Village in Puyallup north into Auburn.

Look for cocktails and a broad whiskey selection at an Edgewood brewery, banh mi and puffed waffles at a new boba shop and teriyaki from a popular Seattle-based company.

These fresh faces join new places to eat and drink around Tacoma, too.

Here’s a peek at recently opened restaurants in the greater Puyallup area.

BB’S TERIYAKI GRILL

Sunrise Village, 10221 156th St. E, Puyallup, 206-876-9105, bbsteriyaki.com

Another teriyaki restaurant has landed in South Hill, but this one purports to stand out from the rest with a focus on sustainable seafood and local beef, including Painted Hills brisket. It’s the sixth location for the Seattle-based brand, which has shops in Issaquah and Arlington. Build your own meal starting at $12, with proteins like spicy chicken, tofu or that brisket; your choice of two sides, including rice or veggies, and of course a sauce. Online ordering available. Open daily 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

TEALICIOUS - PUYALLUP

1100 N Meridian Ave., Puyallup, 253-604-4589, tealiciousdd.com

The family behind Tealicious in Bonney Lake, which opened in 2019, brings its brand of boba to Puyallup. Located in the corner of the Fred Meyer building, the shop offers classic milk teas — from taro to red bean, watermelon to honeydew — and blended versions, with flavors like mango, coffee, peach and avocado matcha. Specialty iced drinks include a lychee passionfruit or mango blue lemonade. Prefer smoothies without milk? Try the slushy versions, and then take a photo in front of the vibrant sunflower wall. Snack on a Taiwanese puffed waffle, a savory cheese puff or a BBQ pork banh mi. Order online for quick pickup. Open daily at 11 a.m.

THE SQUIRREL’S DEN AT ACORN BREWING

2105 Meridian Ave. E, Edgewood, 253-517-8899, acornbeer.com

Acorn Brewing has leaned into its forest-friend vibes at this new whiskey bar and cocktail lounge. “The Den,” as it’s already affectionately known, is an expansion of the brewery taproom, which opened in 2019. Look for whiskies from around the world and cocktails such as an old-school amaretto sour or classic old-fashioned. The full bar means margaritas, Negronis and more are on deck. Order sandwiches from the house kitchen, or check social media for the regular food truck rotation. Open Tuesday-Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday-Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

COPPER COINS DRINKERY - SUMNER

16202 64th St., Sumner, coppercoinscoffee.com

This drive-thru coffee company has shops in Parkland and Buckley, but the new Sumner location takes a step into full-service with cocktails, beer and funky flatbreads. Still on the menu are the brand’s popular tie-dyed smoothies and dessert-like creations — Fluffernutter with those addictive peanut-shaped cookies, MMMBop with mini M&M’s. From the bar, the menu carries a similar approach, such as in the Gravedigger with coffee liqueur, vanilla vodka, cold-brew whiskey whipped cream served in a glass with a rim of crushed Oreos. There’s even a section dedicated to throwbacks like the Long Island Iced Tea — or keep it simple with a cosmo or retro gimlet with Rose’s lime. Open Monday-Saturday at 6 a.m. and Sunday at 8 a.m. Thursday-Saturday, the drinkery stays open until 11 p.m.

ESPRESSO STOP - ALGONA

35739 West Valley Highway S, Algona, estop.coffee

Originally a single Edgewood stand, Espresso Stop now operates 10 locations, including one full-service cafe in Enumclaw that serves decadent milkshakes. Specialty drinks include the Milky Way with chocolate, caramel and marshmallow, the Junior Mint and the Banana Split with white chocolate and hazelnut. Energy drinks come in four colors here and more than two dozen flavors. Grab an asiago bagel, Beyond breakfast burrito and other pre-packed sandwiches in addition to muffins and cookies. Open weekdays at 4:30 a.m. and weekends at 5 a.m.

BIRRIERIA TIJUANA FOOD TRUCK - AUBURN

Parked at 76 gas station, 1111 17th St. SE, Auburn, 253-954-7327, birrieria-tijuana.com

Has Birrieria Tijuana become the region’s quesabirria king? Following the original Burien and then Lakewood restaurants, locations have cropped up in Federal Way, Everett and Spokane. The food truck will serve the same cheesy beef birria in many forms — tacos, mulitas, burritos, tortas — that fans have come to know. Owner Fredy Zavala is on a mission, it seems.
