New wine-tasting room in Gig Harbor offers flights, meat and cheese pairings

Seattle-based Spruce Hill Winery has opened a wine-tasting room in Gig Harbor after originally setting up shop in Seattle’s SoDo district in 2023.

The new tasting room opened Friday, Jan. 23, at 5229 Olympic Dr., across from Harbor Greens.

Spruce Hill Winery was started by local couple Mark and Jo Bader, who were in the wine industry for decades before deciding to start their own brand.

While Spruce Hill makes its wine in Seattle and has a small tasting room there, the couple said they were looking for a bigger space.

“We wanted to be in a place that could be very community focused,” Jo Bader said.

Gig Harbor provided just that, for the winery and for lives outside the business.

“We fell in love with Gig Harbor, and we decided to buy a house here,” Mark Bader said. “It’s a beautiful community … and we just wanted to have a tasting room here.”

The space on Olympic Drive is meant to have a welcoming, cozy vibe.

There’s comfy seating, a bar and a large community table tailored for big groups. The walls of the tasting room will feature a rotating selection of local art.

“We’re envisioning book clubs coming in and chatting about their book, or different community groups that are looking for a place to hang out,” Mark Bader said.

Glasses of white wine and rosé start at $12, while red wine glasses start at $18. The tasting room will also offer wine tasting flights starting at $20 a person, with themes like “Crisp and Fruity” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

Wines range from $20 to $38 per bottle. Selections include the 2024 Albariño, which the winery describes as a “bright, coastal-leaning white,” and the 2022 Cabernet Franc, sourced from Coyote Canyon Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills.

Mark Bader’s personal favorite is the Rainforest Red, the winery’s flagship Bordeaux-style blend.

For every bottle of Rainforest Red that’s sold, the winery gives money to One Tree Planted, a nonprofit focused on global reforestation.

While the Seattle tasting room is smaller and just offers wine, the Gig Harbor tasting room offers a selection of snacks, including local meats and cheeses including salami, and aged goat gouda cheese.

The Baders said they want to make sure there’s something for everyone, and don’t want the tasting room to give off a pretentious vibe.

“We really want to demystify wine and make it into something that’s accessible to everybody,” Mark Bader said.

But for those that are interested in the world of winemaking, the pair said they’re happy to share their knowledge.

“If they just want to come in, get their glass of wine, visit with their friends, great,” Jo Bader said. “But if somebody wants to learn more, we’re there for them. We can explain how the wine was made, we can talk about where it came from.”

In the future, the Baders said the tasting room will also host classes about winemaking and food and wine pairings.

“We’re excited to be part of the community, and we’re looking forward to many, many years ahead,” Jo Bader said.
