Hawaiian BBQ chain opens in Bonney Lake, offering plate lunch, spam musubi
A fast-growing Hawaiian barbecue chain has opened a location in Bonney Lake.
L&L Hawaiian Barbecue opened Jan. 20 at 20621 State Route 410 East. The fast-casual chain focuses on plate lunch, a meal that’s popular in Hawaii, consisting of rice, macaroni salad and a protein.
Plate lunches range from $14.50 to $19.75 depending on the protein, and each comes with two scoops of white rice and one scoop of macaroni salad. Protein options include kalua pork, chicken katsu, fried fish, hamburger patties, BBQ short ribs, beef and chicken.
There’s also a variety of burgers, bowls and saimin, a Hawaiian noodle dish. Musubi, a block of rice and protein wrapped in seaweed, go for $3 each. Along with the traditional spam musubi, you can get it with Portuguese sausage, BBQ chicken or chicken katsu.
There are 10 other L&L Hawaiian Barbecues in Washington, including two in Tacoma.
The franchise originated in Hawaii in the 1950s and continues to operate dozens of locations across the islands and mainland United States.
The Bonney Lake location is owned by cousins Robert Ramos and Ephraim Rollolazo, who said in an email to The News Tribune that they grew up eating at the L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in Federal Way, especially the chicken katsu.
“It was a comfort food that reminded us a lot of our family, both in Hawaii and in the Philippines respectively,” Ramos wrote in an email.
Bonney Lake seemed like the right choice for a new location since it’s a high-population area with limited food options, Ramos said in an email. Before the Bonney Lake location opened, those in the area would have to drive 30 minutes or more to the nearest L&L.
The grand opening for the Bonney Lake location is set for Feb. 28.
