New food truck program to boost this South Sound city after floods

The city of Pacific is launching a new food truck pilot program this spring targeted at re-energizing the area following major flood damage late last year.

The year-long pilot program will start with the weekly event “Food Truck Fridays,” the city announced Tuesday. Starting Friday, May 8, a variety of food trucks will offer lunch service on Fridays outside Clint Steiger Memorial Park next to City Hall.

A mix of different food trucks will be at the park each Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., including Dick’s Drive-in Food Truck, Tacos Cortes, Brank’s BBQ and Gonzo Panini.

Food trucks will also be stationed during some special events at the park, including Pacific Days on July 10 and 11, National Night Out on Aug. 4 and Outdoor Movie Night on Aug. 21. Additionally, the Pacific Community Center will have a food truck for its Harvest Festival on Halloween.

The Washington State Food Truck Association will be in charge of the pilot program, the city said.

“Food trucks are a powerful tool for economic revitalization,” said Carl de Simas, the city’s community development director, in a press release. “They help activate public spaces, attract visitors, and provide low-barrier opportunities for new entrepreneurs. We’re really looking forward to this partnership and what it can bring to Pacific.”

The city was hit hard by the flooding in December — hundreds of residents were displaced after a levee breach along White River, Mayor Vic Kave reported at the time.

Lori Johnson, director of the Washington State Food Truck Association, said food trucks can create a sense of community after trying times.

“This pilot program represents resilience, creativity, and forward momentum, plus food trucks bring people together, support small businesses, and can help restore a sense of normalcy and vibrancy to our cities” Johnson said in a press release.

The full food truck program schedule is available on the association’s website.
