Knapp’s, an iconic Tacoma diner, closes after nearly 90 years in business
After nearly 90 years operating in Tacoma’s Proctor District, Knapp’s Restaurant and Lounge has closed.
On Monday, a sign was posted on the front door of the restaurant, reading “Knapp’s is closed. Thank you for the memories. We’ve enjoyed serving you.”
Knapp’s, 2707 N. Proctor St., has been a Tacoma institution since 1938 when it opened as a delicatessen. The adjacent bar was added in 1969.
Rumors swirled back in 2024 that Knapp’s was on the market and would close, but the owners at the time insisted it would stay open, as previously reported by The News Tribune. Turns out the owners were looking to sell, but they found a buyer.
Maple Valley resident Billy Brewer took over Knapp’s in August, telling The News Tribune at the time that he “fell in love with the place.”
Brewer also praised staff for keeping Knapp’s up and running.
“They kept this place open by the effort that they’ve put forth,” Brewer told The News Tribune. “Knapp’s means family.”
On Monday, no one at Knapp’s could be reached for comment on the closure.
The diner served breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving up staples like steak ‘n’ eggs, burgers, meatloaf, along with beer, wine and elevated cocktails.
According to another sign posted on the door Monday, Knapp’s will open Saturday from 7 to 10. “Coffee only. Come share the <3,” the sign read.
