Tacoma’s Hilltop Kitchen will close Saturday the owners of the Hilltop neighborhood restaurant and lounge have announced.
Wrote co-owner Chris Keil in a release, “We’ve negotiated for months with our landlord, and after failing to come to an equitable agreement on a lease extension, it’s time for us to go. This will be our last week, with our final day of service being Saturday, Dec. 19.”
Denise Tempest, owner of the building and the Tempest Lounge that previously operated at that space, said last week she’s searching for a new tenant.
Wrote Keil, “While we are sad about the closing of this chapter, we’re immensely grateful for nearly 2 1/2 great years. We have had a great run with the opportunity to work with the most beautiful, talented, creative, hard-working people we have ever met.”
Co-owner Matthew Schweitzer said the restaurant and lounge is in search of a new home, and lease negotiations are underway for an undisclosed location.
Said Keil in the release, “The good news is that this isn’t over. We’re working on another home for HK, and we’re planning strategic partnerships with our friends in the community that would allow us to continue doing what we do in some capacity.”
The speakeasy-style restaurant and bar opened in August 2013 in an unexpected neighborhood for a high-end cocktail lounge with Latin-themed craft cocktails.
Keil and Schweitzer also own Marrow, a restaurant they purchased in 2014 that operates in Tacoma’s Sixth Avenue restaurant neighborhood.
