ENGINE HOUSE NO. 9 WINS BEER AWARD

Tacoma’s Engine House No. 9 took home five medals and a top designation from the Washington Beer Awards on June 18. The Tacoma restaurant and brewery won the award for mid-size brewery of the year.

The medals it took included a silver for its Don of Time, an American-style pale ale. It won two medals in a single category for brett beers — a gold for its Friendship brett and a bronze for its Nectarberry. In the German sour beers category, its Wild Tacoma Table Sour took home the silver. In the vegetable beer category (yes, there is such a thing), the brewery won a gold for its Rhubarb Wild. It also received a special designation: Best Washington Agricultural Product Inspired Beer for its Blackberry beer.

LEGENDARY DOUGHNUTS OPENING DATES ANNOUNCED

Prepare yourself for two doughnut bakery openings from Legendary Doughnuts, the regional bakery with locations in Lake Tapps, Tacoma and Covington. The bakery opened its first doughnut shop, specializing in oversized and fanciful-themed doughnuts, in 2010. This year, it will open two more.

A Federal Way (in King County) location was expected to open this week, but construction delays pushed that out to a July opening. In Frederickson, the Legendary Doughnuts in the Canyon Crossing Shopping Center is expected to open around mid July. More information at legendarydoughnuts.com.

GALLOPING GERTIE’S BIRTHDAY

Galloping Gertie’s turns 64 in July and is having a monthlong party to celebrate that includes special hamburgers sold on souvenir Frisbees. “We’re still galloping as a family-owned restaurant,” said Susan Rothwell, whose mother, Gertie Rice, was the founder of the restaurant that opened in the Tillicum neighborhood in 1952. Fun Gertie’s fact: The restaurant was named after Rice’s interest in race horses, not after the bridge. Find Galloping Gertie’s Bar and Grill at 15417 Union Ave. SW, Lakewood; 253-584-4848.
