Northwest-based restaurant company NYP Bar and Grill opened its first South Sound location Wednesday near the Tacoma Mall. The casual-themed restaurant specializing in towering burgers and beer-flavored pizza crust will serve lunch and dinner daily, as well as weekend brunch.
The restaurant opened Wednesday in the long-dormant space that previously held Chevy’s Fresh Mex, which closed in 2012.
The restaurant includes a bar serving beer, wine and spirits.
Also find sandwiches and pasta on the menu, as well as a handful of grilled meat entrees.

The first NYP Bar and Grill opened nine years ago in Lynden in northern Washington by Mike Novak, who has since opened restaurants in Bellingham, Seattle, Everett and Burlington. Another location will open next in Renton.
The pizza restaurant originally focused on New York-style pizza (thus the name, NYP), but has since changed its formula to the more ubiquitous artisan style preferred by the region, although the restaurant calls its pizza “craft.”
The restaurant does have a mission of supporting local businesses and in that regard plenty of Northwest businesses are represented. Scotch ale beer from Bellingham’s Boundary Bay Brewery flavors the pizza dough. Seattle’s Cascioppo Brothers provides its cured meats for pizza toppers and Mount Vernon’s Draper Valley farm supplies the restaurant with its chicken. Hempler’s, the Bellingham company that makes bacon, also is listed on the restaurant’s menu.
The tap list has 24 beers listed, and they’re all from the West Coast.
