Is South Tacoma Way part of your late-night driving route? You may want to reconsider next week

Drivers planning on traveling between state Route 16 and Interstate 5 overnight want to consider a new route this week.

Crews are set to begin work Monday night (July 16) to connect the carpool lane between state route 16 and I-5. A section of South Tacoma Way will be closed overnight while workers remove temporary framework from a new overpass.

Both directions of South Tacoma Way will be closed each night Monday through Saturday (July 19). The section will be closed from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 11 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday.

Traffic will be detoured onto Center Street via South Wilkeson and Pine streets.

A bridge and direct-access ramp to connect I-5 and state Route 16 carpool lanes are being built to increase the capacity and improve traffic flow on the route.
