Even if Tony Miles loses the World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas this week, he’s already won big.

$1 million big.

Miles, an alumnus of Tacoma’s Stadium High School, is in third place going into the showdown of the final nine players of the tournament, which will pay $8.8 million to the winner. Miles will win $1 million, even if he comes in ninth.

The $10,000 no-limit hold’em world championship airs at 6 p.m. Thursday on ESPN, picks up Friday and concludes Saturday.

The former Tacoma resident now lives in Florida. He reportedly has been wearing Seattle Seahawks jerseys during the tournament.

Miles had to best more than 7,800 players in the tournament to get to where he is now. The total prize pool is $74 million.
