No mid-week fishing in the Tacoma-Vashon Island area

If you were hoping to get in some fishing in the middle of the week, you might need to make new plans.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Friday that salmon fishing from a boat around the Tacoma-Vashon Island area (known as Marine Area 11) will be closed Tuesdays through Thursdays, beginning Tuesday (July 17).

Salmon fishing can still be done from piers and shorelines.

Early estimates indicate that, with the current daily catch rates of salmon in the area, the allotted quota will be surpassed before the season closes at the end of September, according to the department.

The Tuesday-Thursday closure will increase the likelihood of maintaining season-long fishing and stay in compliance with conservation goals, the agency said.

Anglers can still fish for salmon in other Puget Sound marine areas except for Area 8-1 (Deceptions Pass, Hope Island and Skagit Bay) and Area 8-2 (Port Susan/Port Gardner).
