342,000 furnace parts recalled after ‘significant fire and smoke damage’ to homes

Burning down the house is not among a furnace’s functions. That’s why Goodman Manufacturing Co. recalled 342,300 evaporator coil drain pans in the United States and Canada.

The drain pains are “installed with residential condensing gas furnaces in an up-flow configuration.”

The exact problem with the drain pans, as described in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission alert: “The molded plastic drain pan located at the bottom of the evaporator coil, when installed with a residential condensing gas furnace in an up-flow configuration, can overheat, melt, and deform, posing a fire hazard.”

Apparently, that’s not an idle concern because 23 reports of fire from this problem have reached Goodman. “These incidents have resulted in significant fire and smoke damage to residences.”

This covers evaporator drain pans with serial numbers beginning with 1901 through 2101. They were put on furnaces in the vertical configuration in 2019, 2020 or 2021. If there’s any confusion about whether your furnace and drain pan are in the recall, check with Goodman.

In addition to the recall site, you can call Goodman at 888-520-0579, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Eastern time.
