Need a peekaboo buddy? Humane Society offering special cats to adopt this weekend

Looking for a mature cat or even one that might need some extra TLC?

The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County will have a “Whiskers in Wonderland” adoption event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 9) and from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Sunday (Dec.10) at Watson’s Greenhouse and Nursery, 6211 Pioneer Way E., Puyallup.

The event is to showcase the shelter’s cats “who are shy and timid in a shelter environment,” according to a news release.

Interested? Here are more details, with answers courtesy of Shelby Taylor, marketing and public relations manager for the shelter:

Q. How many cats will be available?

A. Approximately a dozen.

Q. How old are the available senior cats?

A. Senior cats are 8 years and older. However, some younger cats may also be available.

Q. For those available cats with “special needs,” what does that mean?

A. Potential special needs include irritated skin, shy and fearful behavior, or medical issues.

That being said, every potential adopter goes through a counseling process with a knowledgeable volunteer who works to find the perfect match.

These volunteers also coach on how to best care for special cases.

Q. What’s the adoption cost per cat?

A. Cats 6 months of age and older are $60, and cats 8 years and older are $16.

Q. Is there any similar event for dogs?

A. While we have had dog-specific events in the past, we often have more senior, timid and special needs cats who stay longer at the Humane Society, especially around the holidays.
