Walmart introduces gym memberships at $9 a paycheck for workers and their families
Walmart employees now have the option of joining local gyms at a cost of $9 a paycheck.
The cost also includes workers’ spouses and dependents ages 18 to 25.
The program, offered through Tivity Health and called the Walton Life Fitness Pass, offers gym memberships to more than 9,000 fitness sites nationwide.
The multi-year agreement, announced this month, is part of Tivity Health’s Prime Fitness network, which offers a reciprocal membership at participating facilities, which include national chains, community centers, recreation centers and locally-owned facilities.
Gyms included in Washington state include Planet Fitness and Anytime Fitness. In the Tacoma area, sites include Peoples Community Center and the Eastside Community Center, STAR Center, The Centre at Norpoint, Gateway Fitness in Gig Harbor and North Hill Fitness in Edgewood, according to its online list.
Along with Prime Fitness, Tivity operates SilverSneakers, Nutrisystem and other diet/health programs.
Participants join and use the program’s online tools to help keep track of progress and goals. If a worker’s dependents live somewhere else, they still can be a part of the program at their location’s participating sites accessible through the online lookup tool.
All of the retail giant’s full-time, part-time and temporary associates for both Walmart and Sam’s Club are eligible for the program, which adds up to 20,571 workers in Washington state alone.
The number of those eligible nationwide is an estimated 1.5 million, including dependents.
“Staying active also has financial benefits,” Tivity said in its news release announcing the program. “Inactive adults spend $1,437 more per capita — 29.9 percent higher costs — in annual health care expenditures compared with active adults.”
