Need a job? IRS is hiring for help in collecting unpaid taxes

The Internal Revenue Service is hiring in the Seattle area.

As it gets closer to the April 15 filing deadline for 2019 taxes, the agency needs people to answer phone lines for collection of unpaid taxes.

The agency plans to add up to 150 workers at the Seattle IRS call center.

The positions, ranked at the government’s GS-5 level, pay $18.33 to $23.83 an hour. The jobs are listed as full-time seasonal with an anticipated start date of June 8.

The Seattle jobs are part of a hiring push at 19 IRS locations nationwide to staff a specialized call line for taxpayers who receive a balance-due notice for unpaid taxes.

The IRS emphasizes that these are taxpayers at the earliest stages of the IRS collection process. Also, the work is different than that of the help lines for people calling with general questions during tax season.

“These new phone assistors will work with people who have past-due tax bills,” Eric Hylton, the IRS Small Business/Self Employed commissioner said in a news release. “If taxpayers owe money and start receiving letters from us, it’s critical for them to contact us early in the process so they can explore all options.

“These new phone assistors — along with other steps we’re taking — will help us work with more people earlier in the collection process.”

Interested applicants can search Seattle IRS contact representative positions on the USAjobs.gov website. The application deadline is Feb. 14.
