J.C. Penney is keeping its Washington state stores, for now

Good news, Washington state fans of J.C. Penney. Your stores are safe, for now, once they reopen amid the current pandemic.

J.C. Penney on Thursday announced its list of 154 initial store closings. While Idaho and Oregon are among the nearly 40 states to see some stores close, no Washington state stores were listed.

J.C. Penney’s at the Tacoma Mall and South Hill Mall in Puyallup await reopening as the county remains in Phase 1 of the state’s Safe Start Plan.

“We will continue to operate the majority of our stores and our flagship store, jcp.com, to ensure our valued customers continue to have access to the products and brands they need and want,” the retailer said in a statement posted Thursday on its website that included the list of closures.

The announcement came amid Penney’s latest bankruptcy court filings. The retailer filed for bankruptcy reorganization in May, one of a slew of retailers headed down similar paths amid store shutdowns nationwide as part of the novel coronavirus pandemic response, including Pier 1 Imports and Tuesday Morning.

Thursday’s store closing list isn’t the end of this, though.

The retailer announced in May that as part of its bankruptcy, it would be closing about 192 stores by February, and another 50 in 2021, leaving the retailer with 604 locations, down from about 860.

Additional closures will be announced in the coming weeks.
