Fred Meyer issues recall on cheese dips sold in delis over possible salmonella risk

Fred Meyer this week reported it is recalling about 17 varieties of cheese dip sold in its delis over potential salmonella contamination, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in the young and elderly and among those with compromised immune systems.

No customer illnesses have been confirmed to date.

Healthy individuals exposed to salmonella can suffer fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection can enter the bloodstream and lead to more serious illness.

On July 31, supplier Onions 52 alerted the retailer that it had received onions from Thomson International, involved in an earlier salmonella recall with its onions.

According to Tuesday’s news release, “On Aug. 1, bulk onions sourced from Thomson International Inc. were removed from sale in stores that had been identified as receiving the affected product. Subsequently, it was determined that several in-store made cheese dips may have used red onions from the produce department as an ingredient.”

The 17 dips, in plastic containers under the labels Murray’s, Jarlsberg or Deli, were sold between May 15 and Aug. 6. A full list and more details can be found at fredmeyer.com/i/recall-alerts.

Stores have pulled the recalled items from shelves, and Fred Meyer says it has started to alert customers who might have purchased via alerts on regular receipts and via phone calls.

Customers who purchased should return the dip to a store for a full refund or replacement. For more information, call Kroger Customer Connect at 800-576-4377.
