Hobby Lobby plans to open a store in central Tacoma this fall, in the old Top Foods location near Highway 16.
The Tacoma location, at 3130 South 23rd St. in the Tacoma Central Shopping Center, will be the Oklahoma-based craft retailer’s sixth location in Western Washington, after Lakewood, Federal Way, Lynnwood, Everett and Mt. Vernon.
The company confirmed the fall opening on Wednesday. In a statement, the company said the store would employ 30-50 employees. Full-time workers start at $15 an hour, and part-time workers start at $10. The state minimum is $9.32 an hour.
Top Food & Drug went out of business about a year ago, citing competitive pressure from nearby Walmart.
Hobby Lobby was founded in 1972 by David Green. It is privately held and has almost 600 stores nationwide. It states that it operates its business "in a manner consistent with biblical principles." The company is currently suing the federal government over certain birth control mandates in the Affordable Care Act.
