Salishan welcomes a little bit of Seattle with new financial institution opening

Seattle Credit Union on Tuesday celebrated the opening of its first branch in Tacoma.

The new location is in the Salishan neighborhood’s Family Investment Center, 1724 E. 44th St., part of the community center serving that area. The building is owned by The Salishan Association and Tacoma Housing Authority.

The credit union, in a news release announcing the opening, said the new branch is actually a “hub,” with regular hours and a 24-hour ATM. Staff are there to help customers open accounts, answer questions and offer financial counseling.

“The credit union’s mission is to provide financial support and opportunities for communities that are underserved and have been systemically discriminated against. Recognizing a need for financial services beyond King and Snohomish counties, Seattle Credit Union has expanded south to serve the Salishan community of Tacoma,” the credit union said in its release.

Salishan Association Board president Frankie Johnson said in a statement, “We are excited to welcome Seattle Credit Union to the Salishan neighborhood. We believe they will be a great partner to the Tacoma Housing Authority and the Salishan Association by providing services that meet the needs of our community.”

The credit union plans to support local organizations, events and more.

“We are eager to cultivate this partnership and ensure we are the financial institution of choice helping the residents in Salishan grow and prosper for generations to come,” said Jenefeness Franke, vice president of Community Relations and Public Affairs at Seattle Credit Union, in a statement. “This is one huge step in the right direction and it makes me super proud.”

Seattle Credit Union started in 1933 and has nine branches listed on its website, all located in King/Snohomish counties, plus the new one in Pierce County. It has ATMs in Costco and CVS stores throughout Western Washington. It also participates in the more-than 5,000-member Shared Branching network. Customers can access one of the 30,000 surcharge-free ATMS through the Co-op, or Accel networks, according to the credit union.

Operating hours are 10 a.m to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Closed Wednesday and Sunday.

The credit union is offering $25 to the first 200 new members who join either in-person or online. For more information go to seattlecu.com/salishan.
